  1. Hey there lovely people.
Your translations are highly appreciated, especially for clearing up all misconceptions in this fandom.
So Thank you always, and keep up the good work.

Forgive me for this, but I would like to ask you if you could consider changing Syu Shiotsuki, to Shuu Shiotsuki, since her name has been established like that years ago.
I know it can be spelled either way, but she herself has her name as Shuu in any romaji version.
Sorry again if this is inappropriate. I don’t mean to be rude or anything.

    1. Thank you for your message. It is not weird or inappropriate at all. We appreciate your politeness.

We take care for each romanisation by checking to see if we can find what is preferred by the individual person themselves where possible, often though Japanese people spend very time thinking about how they romanise their names simply because its usually for stylistic purposes and they’re thinking about it in terms of Japanese rather than English. However this “check” is quite brief, usually a quick scan of their social media or website profiles.

We selected Syu because it appears in the actress’ episode: https://syu-llff.com/ and her (now web-archived page here) http://web.archive.org/web/20150622022337/http://dioz.jp/talent/shiotsukisyu/. I believe it also appears in the pamphlet.

That said, fans of the actress often have information that we miss from our quick google searches. If you could please provide us with a clear and verified reference for Shuu, we are happy to change it on rerelease. Thank you very much.

      1. Sorry It took me so long to reply, I just checked the site
so here’s a link on my google drive
        it contains 3 pictures
one shows the source material, and the other two are Shuuchan’s name in them.
one of them is from the official Takarazuka annual Otome issue of 2014 (this included profiles of current members, and Shuu was still a member then)
the second is from 2010 Romeo and Juliette program book, where she is listed as one of the cast members.

        I hope this link works
        🙂

      2. Sorry for the double reply,
On a second thought, I think you should ignore my message. Shuu was definitely how her name was written during her Takarazuka time.
When you mentioned the pamphlet though, I just checked the cast list in the official SM site and her name is indeed written as Syu in romaji and not Shuu.
To be honest I don’t know if it’s a preference on the site’s manager or if it is actually how Shuu wants it. But it is not uncommon for former takarazuka members to do little changes on their names after their graduation from company.

        Really sorry for the trouble.

        1. It’s absolutely no problem at all, this is why we like to look at social media and personal blogs because we feel the actual person probably gets more say at what goes on there.

It’s possible that Ms. Shiotsuki has specifically changed her preferred romanisation to Syu to make it stand out more, but its also possibly that she doesn’t think about it and these alterations have to do with whoever’s making the pamphlet. English is reall just being used stylistically here not specifically to show how her name should be in English. Considering “Syu” seems to be more recent and the more unusual variant, it seems more intentional so for the time being we’ll stick with it.

Again it’s no bother at all. Thank you very much for your comment.

          1. I comment your politeness Princess 🙂
such a rare sight in this fandom.

Thank you for taking the time to explain everything.

You guys are a gem 🙂

          2. Thank you for your politeness too! I really enjoy answering questions, if you have any more about anything Sailor Moon (or even Japan in general related) whether its a typo, correct, suggestion, recommendation, cultural note or something, please feel free to contact us here again or through email or tumblr. If we feel we can answer, we’re always happy to [I especially like ones that have to do with romanisations… provided its not Zoilyn Gellar, I still have no idea where that one comes from].

            Thanks again.

  2. YEEEES! I’ve been looking forward to this since you first started posting about it on tumblr! Thanks as always for your hard work!

Also, this isn’t meant to be a complaint or a criticism, just something out of curiosity. What made you decide to use they/them pronouns for Haruka at the start of the musical when everyone, including Michiru, refer to Haruka as “kare”? I feel like I know the answer(s), but I don’t like to make assumptions.

Also, I finally got around to watching the new translation of the Dracul series! The musicals are still great, and your translations definitely helped clear up some things I didn’t understand from when I first watched them. Thank you!

    1. Thank you very much for your message.

It seems the intention of “kare” here is to mislead the audience (or even other characters) on what gender Haruka is, gender-neutral translations cover this without having to force a gender on Haruka until the show blatantly states it which happens during “Making Up With You”.

Though “kare” is typically used for males, Japanese is a language where pronouns are used infrequently as they’re considered a little direct and rude. I will talk about why ‘kare’ has possibly been used for Haruka below, this is my own speculation:

Getting a little off topic, though many of us would like to believe that Haruka is a progressive character who is choosing her own pronouns, accounting for the cultural context and when this was written [this scene really does lift out of the manga], what we’re probably seeing is actually a affirmation of Japanese gender roles. more likely Michiru’s use of “kare” reflects the masculine-feminine dynamic, Haruka fulfils the function of “kare”. In a similar manner she is called Haruka-papa in the manga to Hotaru, not that Haruka has become “male”, she is fulfilling the role of “papa”. If you are wondering why Ami used ‘kare’, Ami probably just took Haruka for a man. Regardless, for consistency, “they” has been used as we feel it covers the necessary of the “twist” that Haruka is in fact a woman without having to box Haruka as a “male”. “Kare” doesn’t exactly make Haruka “male”, “he” is just the English word that is the most equivalent, but words don’t necessary mean the same thing across languages in every context.

  3. Thank you for the response! I thought it might be something along those lines. I really enjoy hearing(reading?) your thoughts on stuff like this.

I convinced some friends to watch this musical with me, and they really enjoyed it. Thanks for helping me corrup– indoctri– introduce them to the Sailor Moon musicals. 😀

    1. Thanks for your question. Feel free to ask us anything else here, through email or tumblr.

We’re always glad to here more people getting into the musicals, the point in this site was to encourage more people to watch them. [Unfortunately we feel we haven’t made much progress in that regard]. Spread the MyuLove! (We suggest SuperS K, Kaguya K and Black Lady K for newbies!)

  4. Thanks so much for this! I’ve been waiting very patiently for your version of this musical. I’m sure you guys are going to do Amour Eternal around this time next year, as well — or so I hope. 🙂

I have all of your releases downloaded and I’m planning on going through each musical in order. I’ve considered doing something on Tumblr to share my thoughts but that’s a long way off, lol.

  5. Hi! Thanks so much for your translations. I was curious if there were any plans to sub the inners’ graduation ceremony from the DVD? Thanks either way!

    1. As of right now, we don’t have any plans but if it is something that is highly requested, we may consider doing it!

  6. are you planning to do Amour eternal 2016 since you done the others i am hoping you will do this one as well because i look forward to seeing it

    1. We do have plans to release Amour Eternal! However, we have been unable to get a raw version of the show as purchasing the DVD is a little out of our budget at the moment. We hope that once we get a copy of the raw we can release it asap! ^_^
