Specifically it's a "zaibatsu", these are large family-owned financial and 
industrial business conglomerates that held great influence in the Japanes 
economy such as Mitsui and Mitsubishi. Many were dissolved after World 
War II but in modern times,  still have influence though  not as powerful 
as they once were.
