They're preparing for hatsumoude, the first Shinto shrine visit of the year. which
many Japanese people participate in. Makoto is preparing shimenawa, 
rice straw ropes used for ritual purification and to protect sacred sites. Smaller
ones may be used to decorate homes around New Year's. Ami's box contains
omikuji,charms usually made from wood or paper with prayers inscribed 
in a brocade bag.  These are bought and ward off bad luck.
