Okaasan te Nan Darou?

Okaasan te Nan Darou? (お母さんてなんだろう?) I Wonder What a “Mother” Is? is a song performed by Chibiusa, Mick, Hook, Cook and King Endymion in “Kaguya Shima Densetsu”, and its revised edition, when Chibiusa attempts to turn the kittens against their Mothers. In the Marinamoon version, Mamoru replaces King Endymion and it is now about Chibiusa trying to comfort Mick and Hook. In the original version of this song, the first few lines are taken from “Chibiusa no Hanran”.

I mean it this time, this time I’ve really snapped
Shikatte bakari no okaasan
Daikirai
Asobou omoikiri hitori demo
Komaranai

Shikararerutte dou iu koto kana
Shikararete mitai na

Oboeteru no wa ano hi no koto dake
Osora e kietetta okaasan naiteta
Koborete chigireta namida no tsubu ga
Houseki ni natte nokottanda yo

Itsuka kanarazu mukae ni kitekureru
Shinjite matteru no okaasan aitai
Okao mo oboeteinai kedo itsumo
Houseki miteru to koishiku naru no

Okaasan koishiitte? aitaitte?
“Sorette shikarareta koto nai kara da yo”
Demo okaasan te sonna ni ii mo no kana

Ikenai koto wo kodomo ga shita toki
Shikatte kureru no ga okaasan
“Sou daro?”
Itsudemo kodomo no shiawase negatte
Aishite kureteru sore ga okaasan

English

This time, I’ll say it, this time I’ve really snapped
A mother that does nothing but scold
I really hate that!
I’ll play to my heart’s content, even if I’m all alone
I’ll have no worries!

I wonder what it means to be “scolded”?
I’d like to be scolded

The only thing we remember about that day…
Our mothers weeping as they disappeared into the sky
They overflowed… They fell into pieces… Their teardrops…
They turned into jewels and were left behind

Someday they will definitely come for us
We want to meet our mothers who we’ve been believing in and waiting for
We don’t remember their faces, but always
We look at our jewels and long for them

You long for your mother? To meet them?
That’s because you’ve never been scolded!”
“But a “mother” I wonder if it’s such a good thing?

When a child does something they shouldn’t
A Mother must scold them for that
“Isn’t that how it is?”
Always wishing for the happiness of her children
Loving them… That is a Mother
